Oceans Golf Club in Daytona Beach Shores offers a golf experience that is welcoming and surprisingly fun for players of all skill levels. Course Director Dorothy Covell describes it as a beautifully maintained, short-game-focused course that continues to draw both local golfers and visitors from across the Daytona Beach area. The club serves a mix of regular members, seasonal visitors, and first-time players who often return after discovering the course.
A Unique 13-Hole Par 3 Course
Oceans Golf Club stands out for its distinctive layout. It is a 13-hole, par 3 walking course designed specifically to focus on the short game. According to Dorothy, the longest hole measures about 120 yards for men and 100 yards for women, making it an ideal course for golfers looking to sharpen their approach shots and putting.
The course was once a traditional nine-hole layout with longer holes. As additional condominiums were built nearby, the design was adjusted to prevent damage from errant shots, resulting in the current 13 shorter holes. The end result is a course that offers a different rhythm from typical 9- or 18-hole facilities while maintaining a fun and challenging playing experience.
Dorothy noted that many first-time visitors are unsure what to expect from a 13-hole par-3 course, but by the end of their round they are often pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable and well-maintained the course is. Many return again and again during their stay in the area.
Designed for the Short Game — and for Fun
The course is known for its strong playing conditions and landscaping. Dorothy emphasized that it is “one of the best courses around” in terms of condition and presentation and a great place for golfers to work on the part of the game most players need to practice — their short game.
While the holes are shorter than those on traditional courses, they still offer challenges. Hole 10, for example, is known for its tricky green. Recently redesigned, the putting surface can send a ball rolling off into nearby bushes if a shot is not placed close to the center.
Another challenging hole is number 6, which features a narrow fairway with gullies and small fences on either side. Many players find themselves practicing recovery shots from these areas, adding to the fun and variety of the course.
Despite the challenges, there are no water hazards and no alligators, allowing golfers to focus on their game without worrying about typical Florida course obstacles.
A Walking-Only Course with Affordable Play
Oceans Golf Club is a walking-only course, contributing to its relaxed pace and easygoing atmosphere. For added convenience, the club offers rental clubs and pull carts.
● Round of Golf: $20
● Second Round: $6
● Rental Clubs: $5
● Pull Cart Rental: $3
These affordable options make it easy for both locals and visitors to enjoy a round without the expense or time commitment of a full-length course. Most players can complete a round in about an hour and a half, making it possible to play more than once in a single day.
Membership and Community
The club has approximately 500 members, made up of both local residents and visiting players who return regularly. Membership is open to anyone, not just nearby condo residents.
Annual membership rates are:
● Single: $520 per year
● Family: $550 per year
Condominium residents receive a large discount because they pay into it monthly through their HOA dues.
Oceans Golf Club maintains an active schedule of leagues and events, including:
● Men’s league twice weekly
● Women’s league once weekly
● Scrambles twice weekly
● Annual club championship
● President’s Cup fundraiser supporting Youth on Course
The club also hosts outside tournaments and community events throughout the year.
Course Care and Ongoing Improvements
Maintenance is a major point of pride at Oceans Golf Club. Each year, the club selects improvement projects, such as renovating greens or tee boxes. In recent years, two greens have been redone annually, and all tee boxes were previously rebuilt.
Director of Golf Course Operations Ben Propst, who holds multiple professional certifications, oversees the course and uses environmentally friendly water and fertilizers. Dorothy noted that other area courses have visited to observe his work and learn from the course’s upkeep. Recently, the city’s mayor also shared positive feedback about the course’s condition and appearance.
A Welcoming Place for Locals and Visitors
Oceans Golf Club attracts a mix of local members and visiting golfers. Because of its Daytona Beach location, many tourists discover the course through online searches or hotel brochures and return multiple times during their stay.
Tee times are not required. While mornings are often busy with leagues and regular groups, afternoons typically offer easy access for walk-on players.
There is no restaurant on site; players simply check in at the pro shop before heading out on the course. The straightforward setup adds to the club’s relaxed and welcoming feel.

Dorothy summed up the Oceans Golf Club experience best when describing first-time players:
“They’re unsure and don’t think it’s going to be much because we’re only 13 short holes. Then they come in after and say, ‘I couldn’t believe how much fun I had here today. And it is so beautiful.’ If they’re in the area for a while, they come back again and again.”
