“We’re a municipal golf course, but it doesn’t have a municipal golf course feel. We’re like a public golf course with a private club feel.” — Jeff Dayton, General Manager
Cypress Head Golf Club in Port Orange stands out as a municipal course that delivers an experience more commonly associated with private clubs. As General Manager Jeff Dayton explains, the course combines public accessibility with a welcoming atmosphere, strong hospitality, and carefully maintained course conditions. Guests are greeted by a staff that actively seeks interaction with players, helping create a community-focused environment rather than a typical city-course feel.
The course attracts a mix of local residents and seasonal visitors. Snowbirds typically visit through mid to late April, while summer play is dominated by local golfers. No matter the season, the focus remains on providing a consistent, enjoyable experience for every guest.
Signature Holes and Memorable Playing Experience
Cypress Head is known for several standout holes that give the course its personality.
The 8th Hole — Risk and Reward
The 8th hole is a reachable par five that presents a classic risk-reward decision. Jeff notes that players often walk away with stories of lost golf balls, doubles, or triples — and occasionally a well-earned birdie. It’s a hole that challenges both strategy and execution.
The 16th Hole — “Night and Day”
The 16th hole offers two dramatically different tee experiences. From the white tees, it plays as a short 75-yard par three. From the black tees, it stretches to about 170 yards, requiring a shot through a narrow chute to a compact green. Jeff shared that this hole produces a lot of hole-in-ones, making it a memorable highlight for many players.
Year-Round Conditions
The course features Bermuda grass, which thrives in Florida’s climate. The fairways are maintained year-round, while the greens are not overseeded in winter. During summer months, the greens may play slightly slower, which Jeff attributes to the natural growing season of Bermuda grass.
Enjoying the Wildlife and Natural Setting
Cypress Head is surrounded by natural scenery and wildlife. Players regularly spot wild turkeys, sandhill cranes, other wildfowl, and fish jumping in the water hazards. Occasionally, golfers may see a Florida gator. As Jeff explained, if a gator becomes too large, a neighbor may call to have it removed if needed.
The wooded landscape, rolling hills, and water features create a peaceful setting that adds to the overall experience on the course.
Programs, Leagues, and Junior Golf
Cypress Head functions as a community hub for organized play and player development.
Leagues and Regular Play
Men’s leagues on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
Ladies’ 18-hole league on Wednesdays
Ladies’ 9-hole league on Thursdays

Jeff shared that summer play tends to be busy early in the morning, slows mid-day, then becomes busy again in the late afternoon and evening, making twilight golf a popular option.
